Release 4.1 of biteSMS is now out on Beta...

It’ll go public on 7th July.

Source is www.bitesms.com/cydia/beta4.1

Added a new Close (X) icon in Quick Compose and Quick Reply, such that the [Call] option is now a permanent button.

The call feature is now back in Quick Compose and Quick Reply.

You can now add smileys in Quick Compose and Quick Reply.

If typing a free format number in the Quick Compose “To:” field, you can now press the Call button without needing to press return first.

If during Quick Compose you lock your phone, then unlock, the “To:” field is no longer cleared out.

Quick Compose can now be called from most places, with or without headphones on, as long as the volume HUD appears (sometimes volume HUD does not show the Quick Compose text, but you can still press it). Also if a slider volume control appears, say directly in the iPod “Now Playing” tab, you still cannot call QC (you need to navigate to a screen where the volume HUD is shown).

Double tap a bubble now displays the exact timestamp of that message (sent or received).

Added URL handling into biteSMS, such that pressing “Text Message” from inside applications such as Contacts, ABContacts, Groups and also links to phone numbers, now calls biteSMS correctly with appropriate recipient numbers passed across.

When pressing the pink send button, and it’s an MMS (so Group MMS as well), you’ll be asked if you wish to send it via your carrier (so you don’t need to manually change the send button from pink to blue).

Added missing image file, such that the iPhone search feature (spotlight) now displays an appropriate sized biteSMS icon.

Updated a number of language translations and added support for the Russian language.

Quick Switch setting now honored in Quick Compose and Quick Reply, and the default is ON if you already have credits.

Made the credits counter (e.g. 320 credits) translucent, so it does not cut-off bubbles so much. Still needs some further work.

Fixed issue, whereby (only sometimes) a smiley could cause a bubble to truncate the displayed text.

Fixed issue, whereby a long text would cause the Quick Reply window to overlap the keyboard.

Fixed issue, whereby in Landscape mode the biteSMS sub-menu that shows “Add Contact” and smileys allowed you to press the keyboard layer below.

The ability to turn-off the (silly) built-in behavior that currently sends a text to multiple recipients as an MMS will be in the next release, i.e. you’ll have a setting, that will ensure group messages are always sent as SMS’s (in the meantime QC already does this by default).

Extra added for the public release:

Pressing Home hardware button in Quick Reply & Quick Compose now closes it.

The “224 credits” counter is now in the text field instead of in the scroll region (goes when you start to type).

Added a favorites icon to the Quick Compose “To:” input field.

Quick Reply & Quick Compose now “carry across” any entered text if “Open” button is used to launch biteSMS.

Quick Reply now works when opening from the lock-screen regardless of the time it takes you to unlock (only for 1 pending message though).

Increased the data timeout when sending via the biteSMS network (as some 2G iPhones experiencing timeout issues).

In about screen added a link to the biteSMS website.

Bug fixes (should not be able to press mute button in lock-screen to bring up partial QC) (stacking issue for QR’s causing locked screen) (we no longer count MMS’s for the Carrier SMS Plan feature).

I think presently this is the biggest visual glitch we have. Can someone post some screenshots of this so we can think about refinements ? I have no iPhone at the moment.. :-(

Nicely done, Martin.

I think it’ll take a week or so to get this right, in the meantime, I’ll put out the Beta in 10 minutes.

Great Martin.. this will definitely help me save costs.. tks!!!

Ironic isn’t it…:)

Hmm is it just me or is the source not there yet?

Avatar Ram 1,846 post(s)

@anananas : www.bitesms.com/cydia/beta4.1

Top of first post :-)

Avatar aLwYn 959 post(s)

yes it definitely is… xD

Avatar aLwYn 959 post(s)

@anananas.. yea.. i tried a few times then manage to add the source…

Avatar anananas 40 post(s)

Of course I’ve seen the url but cydia is telling me that this is no source… I’m stupid – but not that stupid – at least I hope so :)

Avatar Martin Administrator 4,047 post(s)

Careful with typo’s – I just tested it, and it’s all fine from this repo.

Avatar anananas 40 post(s)

Works now. I’m sure it was just me ;)

first of all: thanks for the great work and the effort!

about the message counter. In my opinion it looks even worse than before – sorry. :)

Found a big bug!!! I was listening to music and was trying to increase the volume when I saw the volume HUD telling me I could call out QC.. so I clicked on it and I could see the open, call and send buttons.. So I tried to click on call and the whol springboard went into safe mode.. Haha.. Silly me..

Edit by Martin, works for me, can you reproduce this and email me at help@bitesms.com

You don’t fix the isse of failed send i qr/qc! If you fail to’ send 5 Times with qr/qc and te sixth time you send in conversation you find 5 failed SMS and One send…
And you’ll add a save to’ draft button under open in qr/qc as i suggest?

Edit by Martin, only so much can be done in each release…..

Chill mate.. Take alook at the list before you sprout stuff man..

Screenshot of credits counter. First to post will win a chocolate !

(Disclaimer : nothing will actually be won, offer subject to terms and conditions). :-)

This is how the Message Counter looks like – iiik :)

Other problem
It sometimes adds an empty line at the end. When I try to click onto the line – like it is not there. Don’t understand it :(

I’m from Switzerland – so I hope it is good chocolate :P

What if we move the credit counter to the right side? That’s our reply portion, so we can sacrificed some readability there. Throw in a little semi-transparent background maybe.

How to show the image inline?

Avatar Martin Administrator 4,047 post(s)

It’s more of an issue on the right, because of all the complex animations when you press the Send button and the text forms a bubble and animates over to the right. It should be on the left. Look to be frank it’s not ideal, but until we come up with a better idea…it’s the way it is.

I personally preferred the non-transparent background, but a few users suggested this would be better, so lets see what sort of feedback we get, just trying to work towards the best outcome.

Avatar Ram 1,846 post(s)

Oh Misery ! That is awful ! :-P

Edit by Martin, Bloody hell, hang-on it WAS your idea to make is “like glass”

I have an (animation) idea although I don’t know how difficult the code would be. When the last white bubble reaches the threshold, just before getting overlapped by the counter, make the counter slowly disappear behind the bubble. Like a beautiful sunset.

In other words, the counter will be present only when the conversation is at its far reaching end, ie. the latest bubble. Scroll up and the counter disappears.

Love ?

Also add option to turn counter off from Settings. Its like if someone has an SMS plan from the carrier with let’s say 50 free monthly texts, one can’t see this number as a counter when in “Send via Carrier” mode. Then why so specifically in biteSMS ? :-)

Seems like the animation from the main message windows to the setting windows is not smooth.

Need to get used to the ‘X’ button. Sometimes its kinda hard to press with just one hand.

Edit by Martin: Tip press inside the window not outside it.

Avatar Ram 1,846 post(s)

Also, the blinking cursor needs to move down one pixel for symmetry. The native app moved it up, God knows why !

Edit by Martin, Ram your getting picky now!

@toblo image inline with normal a href html code:

@toblo your suggestion about the semi transparent background is at least better
@rasasaurus as usual you make a great suggestion – sign +1 for the message counter!

Martin, can you increase the area of touch for the button ?
