Hello, one thing I consider essential is to disable sending of national characters.
Let me explain: in countries where we use characters other than those in the GSM alphabet, the default encoding changes to UNICODE, which decrease the number of characters from 160 to 50 something.

Apple fixed this in 2.1; basically if you write a vowel with a tilde, the sms.app actually sends it without it.

i.e.: you write á é í ó ú in sms.app. However what is actually sent to the carrier is ” a é i o u ”. Why é? because é is a character in the gsm alphabet, while á í ó ú aren’t.

there could be a setting somewhere “Character Set: Use GSM alphabet only, Use Unicode when necessary”

That’d be great.

Thanks.

Fantastic idea!, we’ll add it to v2.7 if possible.

Umm, I tried sending the letters shown above in the native SMS application (Fiirmware 2.2) and mine were not converted, maybe it’s country specific…?

Avatar khyros 85 post(s)

I don’t know.. I can reproduce it anytime. SMS.app shows that i’ve sent áéíóú but the sms received only contains aéiou.
This was quite a stir with Movistar a few months ago because the native sms.app doesn’t have a character counter.. people wrote 150 character texts but were charged for more than one sms (since it was sent as unicode).

Movistar had to refund all those messages and Apple quickly fixed it in 2.1.

I’ve tried it right now…

I have an iPhone 3G from Movistar in Spain and, if i write á é í ó ú with bitesms and send it, i receive á é í ó ú….

but… if i write á é í ó ú with apple sms service and send it with movistar… I only receive a é i o u… like khyros told…

would be very well that bitesms automatically correct the letters like apple, and send it without ´ cause we the spanish could use auto correct without fear of use two sms for only 60 characters…

and finally… khyros… arriba gran canaria! saludos de otro canarión…

Osiris.

Please include this feature in 2.8 It’s also quite important for people in Poland- text messages with our national characters can be also about 50 characters long.

Avatar Martin Administrator 4,047 post(s)

Would you prefer this feature, or the ability to turn off autocorrect for your specific language?

I mean don’t they achieve the same thing?

Avatar khyros 85 post(s)

If I had to choose between the two, definitely unicode character translation.
_You can already turn off autocorrection from the settings menu anyways, but both would be great (for those times when you need to type in a non-supported language such as catalan in Spain.

i prefer unicode character translation…

for me, for example, is very userfull auto correction due to i’ve many mistakes pushing with my big fingers… so autocorrection is very usefull… but now i have this turned of due to the problem with “á í ó ú”. With unicode translation we could use autocorrection without problem and with 160 characters per sms

Yes, between this 2 automatic translation is much better. I have big fingers too, and it would be great to write with ” ł, ą, ź ” and more, but send it just like normal letters. It’s much better than turning off autocorrection!

Avatar khyros 85 post(s)

Klimer .. go to this post http://forums.bitesms.com/forums/4/topics/89?pa… and post the polish to plain character translations.
I know the translation (I’m 1/8th polish) but I cannot write polish characters in this computer!!

Martin, how about this? It would be a very good idea for many countries…

Avatar Deeyw 2 post(s)

Martin, I write it here today, because many people in my country (and also in others) asking all the time, 7 days in week ‘How about disable unicode ? Please, it’s important, please, it’s very helpful for everyone !’

And what can I say ? You and biteSMS team are great developers, who did great job with biteSMS – this program is IMO the best application for iPhone! No games, no music, no videos – but this simply application, which bring many new ways to change sms, or send it in all possible ways.

And I would like to ask you to weigh up this idea, and introduce it in new version of biteSMS

Trust me, it’s the most important thing, which in Poland people needed, and if you given that for us – you given everything, because biteSMS has all important things that we need, except this one

Please, weight up this for us, and for others.

best regards ! :)

It’s on the TODO list…can’t promise which release, but the more support that is posted, the more chance it’ll be in the next release..

Are you saying that the Apple SMS application does something in this respect that we do not?

Avatar Deeyw 2 post(s)

Thanks for you answer :) I hope it will be soon.

If you’re asking me of Apple SMS application, my answer is – no :)

Avatar seekndestroy 2 post(s)

Same problem here. When in a hurry, is usual to spend two credits for a short sms… any idea of when will it be fixed?

Avatar Klimer 46 post(s)

You have to wait. I’ve asked Martin about that and he wrote that it is huge work cause bitesms is26 languages. For me, we won’t get it cause it is too difficult for Martin to do. Everyone can give translation for their own language but as you can see on the top of this topic it isn’t enough. And now bitesms can’t ignore polish autocorrection so we can only dream about disabling national characters

Avatar Martin Administrator 4,047 post(s)

That’s not the case….we will look at adding this, once I get time to look at the array lists posted. Perhaps we’ll start with partial implementation of some countries and add others as we get notified of the mappings.
